![]() If you forgot that weird time skip in Blood Omen 1 when you realize three games later that the time and destiny dude is a key player in this story, you have to go back and replay a game that has not aged well (or probably wasn't all that great to begin with). But there's no "flipping back" in video games. That story is amazingly complex and rewards flipping back to previous volumes to find all the crazy foreshadowed details. I'm rereading Neil Gaiman's Sandman since they made an Audible adaptation that's really good. And the story I think is too complex for a video game story spanning games with vastly different gameplay. But that's the shining jewel in an otherwise average series. I thought it was interesting using environmental kills on the vampires, and shifting into the spirit realm for puzzle solving was a lot of fun. Soul Reaver 1 was amazing, with a ton of interesting concepts. it's not worth your money, your time, or the copious amounts of alcohol you would need to endure it in 2020. This game is epitome of a blockbuster rental. i swear, i don't know how long i played this but it felt like 10 hrs of game in a 20 hr sack.the game is 10 hours longer than it should be.the enemy smashes the gate, and is never seen again. the warehouse has a crane with a box on it. there is no internal logic to these puzzles. the puzzles in this game only work because you know that there is an obstacle in front of you that needs to be removed.3 hard crashes throughout my playing time.cutscenes played where the camera just stayed focused on me, even though audio was playing that clearly was happening somewhere else.i was unable to get out of the cave i had entered, and i could clip through the map. i opened a door, walked through it, the door closed.it is so boring to stand there blocking until your rage meter fills up. many of the other abilities are for puzzle solving, or for doing high damage to enemies when you block enough attacks.all the other abilities that are not stealth.everything about kain's movement is stiff, and the combat features an extremely primitive attack / counter system that just does not work.this story contradicts the other games, is trope-y as hell, and treats female characters like sex objects.it goes through a few phases, where you have to use the environment (and a combination of abilities) to beat back the beast. one of the best levels is an asylum where you fight a crazed vampire at the end. some of the boss battles are pretty creative.when there is fog around, you can use stealth to silently kill enemies, which is pretty satisfying (and some hilarious animations accompany it).the stealth mechanic is good (though very limited). But, I think I need to review it to play Defiance (and get past BO2), so here's my writeup. It's been a while since I followed up on this series of reviews, I found Blood Omen 2 to be a real chore to play, and really have not wanted to think about it. Previously reviewed Blood Omen, LoK 1, and LoK 2.
